Bondage cords are used by riggers for kinbaku, shibari or rope art.
For most ties over the human body, the optimal rope diameter is 8mm. This diameter allows the rope to compress a large enough area of skin, but is not so thick that it will make huge knots that can cause pain.
The most common rope length is 8m. If it is too long, then you have to make 100 wraps before it ends and you have to pull and pull to get the long end of the rope through a knot.It is practical to have also shorter ropes; 2m and 4m for tying a separate limb, hair, etc.
Denser braid makes for less difficult knots, because it compacts less and is thus easier to unpick.
“Lay” refers to how tightly it is twisted together. The tighter the lay, the stier and more durable the rope tends to be. A tight lay (extra stiness) needs extra conditioning or a longer period to "break in" before it is really good to tie with.
